Matthew Lutz-Kinoy

.

At Art Rotterdam Projections Galerie van Gelder presented for the premiere of 'Costume details!', 2013. A film projected on a cinema large paper screen hand painted by Matthew Lutz-Kinoy.

Matthew Lutz-Kinoy acts involve dance sequences, monologues, singing, action painting, water colours, clay sculptures, collages, all of which are bound together through projected narratives or suggestions of a narration. A performative energy is never far away, when Lutz-Kinoy shows his works in space. For him time is never fixed and this creeps easily in many of his work on show. His film pieces are "a point of return in the process of documenting and re-presenting a collection of performances using video, sculpture, and live action in which various ways and all kinds of material create a new social space that is made real by the audiences viewing." he says. The new film installation 'Costume details!' is specifically made for the site at Art Rotterdam Projections. The title refers to his interest in details as may be found on a designer's drawing somewhere in the corner where a more elaborated sketch of e.g. a zipper with seam may be found. For Matthew Lutz-Kinoy it is always an extraordinarily sensitive moment when a work is presented mixing itself in a new context. "My presentation’s temporality is only strengthened and complicated due to the relationship to pre-made and pre-recorded materials. In 'Costume details!' my performance at the inaugural of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in October 2012 such existing film material is used. This featured moment is layered in representation and experience; it is a space of so much joy, highlighting the pleasures of emotion and memory.", he comments.

Matthew Lutz-Kinoy has had solo shows at Gallery Yukiko Kawase, Paris and Cooper Union, New York as well as participating in group projects in Kunsthalle, BadenBaden, Donaufestival Hamburg and Kunstverein Cologne, Germany, New Museum, New York in 2009.
