The bridge is open - the bridge is closed.

On a cold day early in 2012 a lonely visitor passed by in the gallery. With dark raven eyes he looked around in a context of art he apparently was not really interested in. Now and then he gave me a piercing glance and simultaneously he moved around while talking with a modest and withdrawn appearance, as if he wanted to excuse himself for passing by unannounced. Although it did not take a long time for him to ask me directly what I basically had in mind with running a gallery and moreover what I have in mind with the space next doors. "Well, I see myself as a bridge keeper who never knows whether the bridge is open or closed, because it all depends on the artist who is either in a car or on a boat. Anyway, I will show you the space next door, I answered. I told him that the empty space is used for performances and ad hoc exhibitions like a retrospective '24 Years Ahead' of John M Armleder. "Let me know in case you have a plan or proposal and I will see if it fits to this space", I told him. For many months the dark eyed man with sleek-hair and thick-wadded gloves would regularly come along with every time a new proposal, such as the whipping of a concrete pillar with birch branches, a sound performance with sung Irish vowels or taking a picture of the gallery owner wearing a specially made voodoo-like tie. At a certain point he politely asked me if he could take some friends with him who would be willing to participate in one of his plans. For hours they discussed ideas and proposals, both in my gallery as well as in the other space. Every time he brought some objects to the latter and placed these on the floor. Slowly a kind of to me unclear collection came into being: a dried up orange with smelly cloves, a Polaroid photo of the aura of Ola Vasiljeva, a South American piece of smoked end grain wood for calling good spirits of Adriana Gonzalez-Hulshof, an ultra-bright coloured hammock of Els van Odijk, a folded paper as handmade calendar with 32 days made by himselfÂ….

On the 18th of October 2013 this man called Aditya Mandayam brought together three artists for a first set of performances by Bea McMahon, Juan-Pablo Villegas Delgado and Yayati Papita.

Aditya Mandayam is an Indian artist, writer, and filmmaker. His locus operandi meanders somewhere between the Stage, the Screen, and the Eye. Using linguistic and musicological methods he posits the camera obscura as the first A.I.

Mandayam was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 2012 and 2013. His first book The Ooze, a collection of epigrams on white cubes & blackboxes, was published by Roma this summer.

Since Year 44 of the Unix epoch Mandayam has led Brud as Benevolent Dictator For Life.

Brud are rules-of-thumb that grew sentient in the Twenty-Teens. An intelligent artifice (i.e., an I.A) raised on Contemporary Arse, Brud (Polish for filth) learns by feasting on a growing corpse of texts, sounds, & moving image.

Influenced by the aesthetics of modular synthesis, video-jockeying, machine vision & memetics, Brud’s operatic oeuvre is expressed as a Gesamtkunstwerk of sculpture, installation, performance, print, sound, film, & theater intervening in institutional and mediated contexts.

Brud fashion themselves as event misplanners. Misinformed by the history of stage, parlor, and close-up magic, Brud is preoccupied by the psychology of tricks, gimmicks, apparitions, illusions, grifts, scams, and cons. Recent shows include Futura, Prague, CAC, Vilnius, Whitechapel, London, Kim?, Riga, the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, Art in General, New York, Kunstverein Munich, MuHKA, Antwerp, De Hallen in Haarlem, and Galerie van Gelder, Amsterdam.

Statement: Brud replaces Brud with better Brud, Flusser Studies.
