'When hell freezes over'

De Zweedse kunstenaar Monica Tormell toont in haar solotentoonstelling 'When hell freezes over' inderdaad een
stukje van de hel, die te horen en te zien is in een installatie met duivelse geluiden voorgebracht door electrische
drums, fluitjes en piepers midden op gestolde zwarte inktplassen. In een volgende ruimte braakt een muur een
pikzwarte brei uit. Beelden die een sfeer van hel en verdoemenis oproepen. Hier tegenover stelt Monica Tormell
een wereld van make-believe met een regenboog, dans, poëzie en kaarslicht. Zij wil de harde werkelijkheid het
liefst veranderen in een wereld die happy is en waarin ieder nieuw begin optimisme teweeg brengt. Zij trekt de
wereld, die zij zich zonder zorgen en ellende voorstelt en toewenst, naar zich toe.
In 'When hell freezes over' brengt Monica Tormell tegengestelde zaken samen. Een brandende kaars is demonisch
en spookachtig, maar de zelfde dansende kaars in de vorm van een rose hand brengt in haar sculptuur ook warmte en
levendigheid. Een regenboog op een foto van een anonieme nieuwstedelijke omgeving verandert via buizen en kabels
in een regenboog, die dankzij een continu sproeiende waternevel daadwerkelijk in de tentoonstelling te zien is. De
werkelijkheid kan niet mooier gemaakt worden!
De kunstenaar over haar werk:
"My works are often about a modified reality. It gives us a recognition. We know it and at the same time it’s unfamiliar
or unrealistic. Usually I take something existing and put it in a new context, or I make something up and place it in a
real context. Todays lifestyle and communication is mostly what inspires me and I like to play with it and twist it.
The media I usually work with are photography, video, drawing, music and datagraphics. It all depends on what fits the
idea. Mostly I work with themes that grow into a project where the mediums are collaborating collectively with each other."

The Swedish artist Monica Tormell shows in her exhibition 'When hell freezes over' indeed a part of hell, which is
heard and seen by means of solidified black ink puddles, accompanied by diabolic sounds coming from an installation
of electrical drums, whistlers and squeakers, made of a plastic watery can, a cardboard tube, and the like. In another space
a threatening black sludge is puked out of a wall. Images that evoke an atmosphere of hell and damnation. In contrast
to this Monica Tormell creates a world of make-believe with a rainbow, dance, poetry and candlelight. Above all she
wants to change the tough reality into a world which is happy, and in which each new beginning brings about an explosive
optimism. She pulls the world to her domain which she imagines free from dragging worries and misery.
In 'When hell freezes over' Monica Tormell unites opposite matters. A burning candle is satanic and spooky, yet the
same dancing candle in the appearance of a pink hand brings to her sculpture also warmth and liveliness. A rainbow on
a photo of an anonymous urban surrounding is changed via tubes and cables into a rainbow, which is indeed factual to be
seen as such, thanks to a contineous produced water spray in the exhibition space. Reality cannot be created more
beautiful than this!
